After an exciting High Sierra Music Festival the Dead Winter Carpenters returned to Lake Tahoe to perform for the weekly concert at Commons Beach in Tahoe City. The band was welcomed by a huge crowd packing Commons Beach and dancing the afternoon away.
Free concerts are always appreciated, and free concerts on the beach is an welcome bonus. The lakefront views and local atmosphere proved to be the perfect environment for Dead Winter Carpenters to perform. From the first notes the Tahoe faithful were up and dancing. The blend of bluegrass and rock that Dead Winter Carpenters bring is a perfect fit for the athletic active types that call Tahoe home. The beat and tempo of the music lends itself to a dancing style that makes the crowd appear to be running in place and jumping in the air. The perfect fit for someone that loves to be active and looks at their dancing routine as a workout. With a variety of styles, Dead Winter flows between Bluegrass, Rock, Folk, and Americana. It appears the whole band is contributing to the songwriting, and that is something that drives their variety of musical styles.
The Bear story was hilarious and definitely an inside joke for Tahoe as Bears are a consistent feature around here. It’s difficult to find a local or someone on vacation that has’nt had a run in with Tahoe’s Infamous Bear population.
Musically The Dead Winter Carpenters have a solid group of players, and it is hard not to take notice of the standout fiddle/violin playing of Truckee local Jenni Charles. Her approach is fantastic and immediately makes me think of other major players to come across the scene such as Allie Kral of Cornmeal, and Enion Pelta-Tiller of Thamusemeant and Taarka. Jenni’s growth from when this project started to now has been exponential and her playing is gaining attention throughout the festival scene. This video highlights the energy she brings to the stage.
Commons Beach is a beautiful site to see live music and a valuable resource for locals. During the summer they have live music every Sunday. People have the ability to anchor their boat or kayak in the water and watch the concert from the lake. A feature not seen in many places that hold weekly outdoor public concerts.
The Dead Winter Carpenters rocked Commons Beach and are now poised to perform at Hornings Hideout in Oregon with a stacked lineup headlined by jam scene giants The String Cheese Incident. Another great opportunity for this awesome up and coming Tahoe band.
What could possibly be a better background for a summer music event?….Tahoe is a spectacular sight. When I am on the shore(s), I can imagine what it would have been like to be a Washoe native, sitting quietly as the waves “lap” the sand…. and hearing a distant drum….what would the stary night sky over Tahoe, looked like 150yrs. ago (no lights anywhere but in the sky)?
Thanks Z…. T
